ANTIQUE PERSIAN KERMAN LEVAR RUG
Southeast Persia
Circa 1890
240" x 134"

The city of Kerman has a tradition of carpet making which dates back to the classical era of the early 16th century. Carpets from this region present elegant formal designs with finely drawn curvilinear pattern details. The ivory field of this piece has a central red lobed medallion supporting an ivory center piece, all with meandering curvilinear vines issuing poly chrome palmettes, flower heads and leaves, blue arabesque spandrels within an ivory palmette and flowering vine border, complementary
floral secondary borders. The rug, handwoven in the late 19th century, has the traditional tribal knotting associated with the finest pieces of the era.
